![]() We began running in the northbound lane on the east side of the road, making our way into town. The course unfolded before us, a scenic route through the heart of Manhattan. We were soon bussed out to the course start line near I-70 on Highway 177, known as the Coach Bill Snyder Highway, ready to embark on our running journey. The vibrant energy in the air was contagious as participants, myself included, prepared for the race ahead. ![]() Runners gathered at Bill Snyder Family Stadium on the Kansas State University campus early in the morning, eagerly anticipating the start of the Bill Snyder Highway Half Marathon. After all, my personal best in the half marathon stands at 1:43:27. The beauty of pacing is that it allows me to enjoy the race without the pressure of racing or hitting personal time goals. I was eager to chat with the participants, many of whom looked to me for guidance in achieving their personal bests. It was a valuable discovery that reinforced the effectiveness of the run/walk method in conserving energy and reducing overall perceived effort and fatigue.Īs for the race day itself, it was filled with excitement and anticipation.Īs I donned my pacing singlet and lined up alongside the runners, I couldn't help but feel a surge of energy. Not only did I have a lower average heart rate than last year despite pacing the same time (158 beats per minute to 156 bpm), but my rate of perceived effort was significantly lower as well. My Garmin smartwatch data also revealed an interesting insight regarding the strategy. It was a fun experiment that I believe benefited me and some of the runners I was guiding. It was a departure from the norm, yes, but taking walk breaks is actually encouraged by the Garmin SmartPacing team organizer, Eladio Valdez, so I wasn't breaking the rules by any means. Most people running with me decided to keep going, maintaining their running stride, but I did notice a couple of runners who followed suit and took the opportunity to stop and walk during those designated intervals. The timing worked out remarkably well because it took exactly 30 seconds to walk through each aid station entirely. To keep that consistency for this race, I decided to incorporate 30-second walk breaks at each aid station, which occurred every 2 miles. This time, though, I did deviate from my usual pacing strategy.Īlthough I am perfectly capable of running 13.1 miles without walking, I have been using the Jeff Galloway run/walk method during my long runs in my marathon training, implementing 3-4 minute run intervals with 30-second walk breaks. The goal is to help racers maintain an even effort and start conservatively, enabling them to run more efficiently. This strategy adjusts the pace based on the terrain, taking into account the uphills and downhills. Rather than maintaining an even pace throughout each mile, we employ a "SmartPace" approach. Pacers like myself follow a meticulously crafted pacing strategy designed to provide racers with the best chance of running a great race. But this time, it was back to the pace range of 8:46 to 8:51 per mile to hit that coveted 1:55 finish time. The Stilly Half in Stillwater earlier this year was the exception, when I stepped in as the 2:00 pacer.

While the real-life Taco Bell may not resemble the fancy establishment depicted in the film, the legacy of Demolition Man's portrayal of the chain lives on as a cultural touchstone. The depiction of Taco Bell in Demolition Man has become a pop culture phenomenon, with many fans referencing the movie's portrayal of the restaurant in popular culture. The restaurant's transformation from a fast-food chain to a high-end establishment is a reflection of the movie's larger theme of the dangers of unchecked commercialism. The portrayal of Taco Bell as a fine dining establishment in the film is intended to be a satirical commentary on the state of American consumer culture and the trend towards luxury and excess. ![]() The epic Soviet movie series Liberation showed hordes of Nazi Tigers played by T-34 tanks that had had their turrets and hulls covered by wooden, boxy kits. ![]() The boxy shape of the Tiger was – and still is – something so iconic that it simply had to be shown. Russian cinema, however, went further, partially thanks to the vast amount of resources poured into making dramatic historical movies. In the American movie "Patton", German Panzers were cosplayed by. In some older American films, the role of the German tanks was played by M47 Pattons with German crosses painted on them – the moviemakers (quite correctly) assumed the average moviegoer would not be able to tell the tanks apart anyway, so why bother when a big black balkenkreuz (or swastika) was enough to identify the bad guys. The movie industry was able to compensate for this in various ways. This, unfortunately, included some quite rare prototypes and this is why relatively few German vehicles have survived to this day. As barbaric as it might sound to us today, in the war-ravaged world of 1945, metal was at a premium and almost all captured armored vehicles – especially the broken-down ones – were almost immediately scrapped to fuel the restoration of Europe. German tanks in working condition were – even right after the war – quite rare. In the 1950s and 60s, movie directors and producers faced a major problem: Very early on, the tanks appearing in movies were often actually real wartime or surplus vehicles, but such tanks could usually only cover the allied side (hundreds of T-34s and Shermans were readily available). Shot from the Soviet movie "Liberation" - notice the T-54 The use of armored vehicles for cinematic purposes goes back to the Second World War (although there are some even older examples). Cinema tanks are armored vehicles (or even trucks in some cases) masquerading as tanks for the purpose of the movie. Let's take a closer look at both these types of vehicles and some of their most common "tells".Įvery proper big screen movie set in a modern war has to have a dramatic scene where a tank (or at least a personnel carrier full of soldiers) appears only to be dispatched by the daring hero. While discoveries of new armored vehicles based on historical photographic evidence are possible (if rare), the majority of cases of "newly discovered vehicles" can be attributed, apart from less-known existing vehicle variants, to one of two categories: IS heavy tank cosplaying as KV-2 by Mosfilm The reality, however, is usually disappointing. Every now and then, a picture of an armored vehicle will appear on the internet often posted by someone excited about finding something new and unusual, making a mark on the pages of armored warfare history. |
